Uterine Fibroid Embolization
If you're struggling with uterine fibroids, a non-cancerous tumor that grows in the uterus, there's no need to suffer in silence.
What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization, also known as Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), is a minimally invasive procedure that involves blocking off the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. Evidence shows that this procedure is a safe and effective treatment for multiple fibroids or very large fibroids.
What Causes Uterine Fibroids?
While the exact causes of uterine fibroids remain unknown, several factors have been found to play a crucial role in their development and growth. These include:
• Family history
• Hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone
• Pregnancy
• Other growth factors
How Are Fibroids Diagnosed?
Your doctor will perform a pelvic exam to check the condition, size, and shape of your uterus.
**Why is Uterine Fibroid Embolization Performed? **
Not all fibroids cause symptoms, but when they do, uterine embolization is an effective way to treat them. Symptoms of uterine fibroids include heavy vaginal bleeding, increased menstrual cramping, low blood count, pelvic pain or pressure, pressure or fullness in the lower abdomen, swelling or enlargement of the abdomen, waking up at night to urinate, and constipation.
If you've tried medicines or hormones to reduce your symptoms but to no avail, it's advised to schedule an appointment with a Gynecology Consultant to discuss your health condition and assess whether this procedure is likely to be successful for you.
How Is Uterine Embolization for Fibroids Performed?
During the procedure, your doctor will make a tiny incision in the groin and insert a small thin tube called a catheter into the uterine artery. The uterine artery is responsible for carrying blood to the uterus. The doctor then injects small plastic or gelatin particles into the blood vessels that supply blood to the fibroids. This cuts off the blood supply, causing the fibroids to shrink and die. The embolization is performed in both the left and right uterine arteries. The procedure usually takes about 1 to 3 hours and doesn’t require a hospital stay.
